Featuring Carlos Reyes and Carol Barrett

The Empty Chairs of February (2024) is noted poet and translator Carlos Reyes’ sixteenth published volume.  Other recent poetry includes Osage Elegy (2021), The Ebbing Tide (2021), Lament for Us All (2021), Sea Smoke to Ashes (2020), Along the Flaggy Shore, (2018), Wrestling the Mistral (2026); translations: Poemas de amor y locura/Poems of Love and Madness; Selected translations (2013), and a Memoir: The Keys to the Cottage, Stories from the West of Ireland (2015). A three times finalist for the National Poetry Series, he is often nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

     Reyes has been a Yaddo Fellow, a fellow at the Fundación Valparaíso (Mojácar, Spain), at the Heinrich Boll Cottage (Achill Island, Ireland), and at CAMAC Center of the Arts (Marnay-sur-Seine, France). He has been poet-in-Residence at Joshua Tree National Park, the Sitka Alaska Island Institute, Acadia National Park, Devil’s Tower National Monument, and Catoctin Mountain Park National Park.

     An inveterate traveler he ventures to the Canary Islands, Cuba, Ecuador, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Panama, and Spain giving readings of his own work and connecting with international poets. Carol Barrett began writing poetry to support the widowed women she was counseling, and fell in love with the art. She has since published three volumes of poetry. Her creative nonfiction book PANSIES was a finalist for the Oregon Book Awards. An NEA Fellow in Poetry, Carol has also published bereavement research in psychology, gerontology, and women’s studies. She holds doctorates in both Clinical Psychology and Creative Writing, and a master’s degree majoring in Dance. She will highlight poems from READING WIND, released this spring. It won second place in the chapbook contest sponsored by the Portland-based Poetry Box. These poems were inspired by her father, a country doctor, musician and farmer.

The Open Mic is open to all audience members. Participants can sign up before the start of the reading or during the break. In the interest of time, Open Mic readers are asked to limit their readings to three minutes.

The Ross Island Grocery and Café is a cozy space with capacity for 40 or so people. Tables are available, so people who arrive early can enjoy a light supper (i.e., a sandwich, salad or burger) while waiting for the reading to begin. If we run out of table space, folding chairs are available. A mic will enhance the readings. There is plenty of unrestricted parking on the streets around the Café.
